What is MOTS-C?

MOTS-C is a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded by the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome, functioning as a retrograde signalling molecule that communicates metabolic stress to the nucleus. Its amino acid sequence is Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg, with a molecular formula of approximately C₁₀₁H₁₅₂N₂₈O₂₂S₂.
