What is AICAR?

AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a synthetic analog of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) that acts as a direct, cell-permeable activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). In research and biohacking, AICAR is a primary reference compound for studying metabolic flexibility, as it bypasses the cell’s usual energy-sensing requirements (the ATP:AMP ratio) to artificially signal a state of low energy, thereby triggering a systemic shift toward fat oxidation and endurance adaptation.
